Why Kasavu Sarees Need Special Care

A Kasavu saree is more than a garment — it is a piece of Kerala's living heritage, woven from fine cotton with real gold or silver zari borders. Because of the natural fibres and precious metallic thread, a little extra care goes a long way in keeping your saree luminous for decades.

Washing Your Kasavu Saree

Always dry-clean your Kasavu saree if it has a heavy zari border. For lighter everyday Kasavu sarees, hand-washing in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent is safe. Never machine-wash — the agitation can loosen the zari weave and cause the cotton to shrink unevenly.

• Use cold water only — hot water weakens cotton fibres and tarnishes zari.
• Soak for no more than 5–10 minutes.
• Gently squeeze; never wring or twist the fabric.
• Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.

Drying

Lay the saree flat on a clean cotton sheet in the shade. Direct sunlight bleaches the cream cotton and dulls the gold zari over time. Avoid hanging a wet Kasavu saree — the weight of the water can stretch the fabric and distort the border.

Storing Your Kasavu Saree

Proper storage is just as important as washing. Follow these steps to keep your saree in perfect condition between wears:

• Wrap in muslin or soft cotton cloth — never store in plastic, which traps moisture and encourages mildew.
• Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks on the zari.
• Place neem leaves or a small sachet of dried lavender in the storage box to deter insects naturally, without chemicals that could damage the zari.
• Keep away from direct light — a dark cupboard or drawer is ideal.

Ironing

Iron on a low-to-medium heat setting on the reverse (wrong) side of the fabric. Place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree to protect the zari. Never iron directly over the gold border — the heat can flatten and tarnish the metallic thread.

Wearing Tips to Extend the Life of Your Saree

A few mindful habits while wearing your Kasavu saree can significantly extend its life:

• Apply perfume and deodorant before draping — chemicals in sprays can stain and corrode zari.
• Avoid contact with rough surfaces that can snag the weave.
• After wearing, air the saree for a few hours before folding and storing.
